Binance hack has become one of the biggest stories in cryptocurrency history after approximately $6.36 billion in assets were moved from Binance wallets across ten blockchain networks, according to TRM Labs.
The cryptocurrency industry has been shaken by what is now being described as the largest crypto heist in history. Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has suffered a massive security breach, with approximately $6.36 billion in digital assets stolen, according to blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs.
The attack took place on October 29, 2026, and reportedly unfolded across ten different blockchain networks, with the majority of the funds drained within approximately 20 minutes.
The scale of the incident surpasses the infamous $1.5 billion Bybit hack of February 2025, setting a new record for cryptocurrency theft.
How Did the Binance Hack Happen?
According to Binance’s initial investigation, the security incident may have started with an engineer’s compromised laptop. However, the exchange later confirmed that investigators had discovered additional points of breach.
Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs reported that attackers compromised Binance’s transaction-signing infrastructure, allowing them to authorize unauthorized transfers from wallets controlled by the exchange.
The stolen assets were moved across multiple blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Bitcoin, Tron, Solana, XRP Ledger and several others.
What makes this attack particularly alarming is its speed and sophistication. Billions of dollars were reportedly transferred within minutes, suggesting extensive preparation before the actual operation.
North Korean Hackers Suspected
Blockchain intelligence firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis have linked the attack to TraderTraitor, a hacking unit associated with North Korea.
TRM Labs says it has high confidence in this attribution, citing similarities with previous attacks attributed to North Korean state-sponsored hacking operations, including the $1.5 billion Bybit theft.
However, Binance has not independently confirmed the identity of those responsible.
Approximately $2.7 Billion in Stolen Funds Frozen
Following the discovery of the breach, major cryptocurrency and stablecoin companies moved quickly to freeze part of the stolen assets.
According to TRM Labs, approximately $2.7 billion in assets has been frozen through coordinated action involving Tether, Circle, Ripple, World Liberty Financial and blockchain security partners.
However, approximately $2.4 billion in Bitcoin and Ethereum reportedly remains beyond the reach of these centralized freezing mechanisms.
Freezing the assets does not automatically mean they will be recovered or returned to Binance.
Binance Suspends Withdrawals and Promises to Cover All Losses
Binance temporarily suspended withdrawals across several blockchain networks while its security teams investigated the incident.
The exchange has reassured customers that their funds remain safe and promised to cover all losses resulting from the security breach using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company resources.
Binance co-CEO Richard Teng confirmed that the company is working with law enforcement agencies and industry partners to investigate the incident and recover the stolen assets.
The exchange has also promised to publish a detailed technical investigation once the security review is completed.
Bitcoin and Crypto Markets React to the News
The announcement triggered immediate volatility across cryptocurrency markets.
Bitcoin dropped approximately 5%, falling below $77,000, while Ethereum and several other digital assets also experienced significant selling pressure.
BNB, Binance’s native ecosystem token, also declined as investors reacted to the news.
The incident has raised serious questions about the security of centralized cryptocurrency exchanges, particularly those responsible for holding billions of dollars in customer assets.
Is This the Beginning of a New Crypto Security Crisis?
The Binance incident represents a major turning point for the cryptocurrency industry.
For years, major exchanges have invested heavily in security infrastructure, custody solutions and protection mechanisms. Yet this incident demonstrates that even the largest platforms remain potential targets for highly sophisticated cyberattacks.
With billions of dollars stolen in minutes, the industry now faces renewed pressure to strengthen wallet security, transaction authorization systems and internal operational controls.
One question remains: If the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange can suffer a security breach of this magnitude, how secure are the platforms holding everyone else’s digital assets?
This is a developing story. Figures and investigative findings may change as Binance and blockchain intelligence firms release further information.
